Proposal for Bandon Hill Primary School to separate into two schools

The Board of Trustees is proposing that Bandon Hill Primary School should separate into two schools. Bandon Hill Primary School is currently a six form entry split site primary school. The school comprises a two form entry site known as Meadow Field in Wallington, a four form entry site known as Wood Field in Carshalton and Oak Field, a base for children with autism on the Wood Field site.

The separation of the school would create one school in Wallington (Meadow Field) and one school in Carshalton (Wood Field and Oak Field).  By creating two schools, each school will be able to adapt the curriculum to suit the needs of their pupils, have a headteacher and provide additional opportunities for funding. The two schools will still work closely together, as part of the Greenshaw family of schools, whilst retaining their character and their place at the heart of their local communities.

Why do it?

Currently, the Ofsted framework expects schools to have high and equal expectations, providing an ambitious curriculum which is studied by all.  As Bandon Hill Primary School is located over two sites it is expected that Wood Field and Meadow Field have the same curriculum, even though they serve different communities. By separating the school, the two schools will be able to provide a high quality curriculum that suits the needs of their pupils and the opportunities available will only improve.

By creating two schools it will enable each school to have a headteacher to support the staff and drive the quality of teaching and learning.

Each school will be entitled to apply for funding, increasing the opportunities to receive additional money to benefit the school’s financial position.

The two schools will still work closely together, as part of the Greenshaw family of schools, whilst retaining their character and their place at the heart of their local communities.

Decision process

The school’s senior leadership and governing body are supportive of the proposal.  The feedback from the consultation will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees before making the decision to submit an application to the Department for Education to separate the schools.  The Regional School Commissioner and Education Skills and Funding Agency will need to approve the change.  The earliest the school will be separated is 1 September 2022.

Will the school change its name or uniform?

The name and uniforms of the schools are to be decided and parents/carers, staff and pupils will be consulted before any changes are made.

Will the admissions arrangements change for the schools?

If the school is to separate, admission arrangements for each school will be required.  The Greenshaw Learning Trust as the admission authority will maintain the principles of serving the local community.  The Local Authority (Sutton Council) will still allocate special needs places.  The revised admissions arrangements are being consulted on and further details can be found here.

Changes for staff

The Greenshaw Learning Trust will remain the single employer for all school staff.  Staff working across the two sites will be able to continue this arrangement, should the schools be separated.
