Sutton Council Planning Committee rejects proposals for new Sutton schools

Sutton Council has refused to give planning permission for the building of the proposed new secondary school and special school on the disused all weather pitch and part of the southern end of the Sports Village at Rosehill Recreation Ground.

The planning application that had been submitted by Wates on behalf of the Department of Education for the proposed new school building was considered by Sutton Council’s Planning Committee on 10 September 2019. After lengthy discussion, and hearing from Wates about what they had done to address concerns about the application and from objectors, the Committee voted to reject the proposals.

It was anticipated that if planning permission was granted at this time, the Greenshaw Learning Trust would open the secondary school in September 2020 in temporary accommodation to meet the need for school places.  According to the Department for Education's policy, as planning permission for the permanent school building has not been granted by Sutton Council,  the school will not receive funding to open in September 2020.  

Will Smith, CEO of the Greenshaw Learning Trust, commented: “We are disappointed that Sutton Council’s Planning Committee has not approved the planning application to enable the proposed new schools to go ahead.

There is a clear need for the proposed new schools, which would be built on a site that is designated in the local plan for a new school, without building on any of the open parkland.

We will continue to work with Wates, Sutton Council and the Department for Education to achieve our ambition to open these much-needed new schools.”
